126 film was introduced in 1963 for Kodak’s Instamatic line, the format quickly became a family favourite, celebrated for its drop‑in cartridge and neat square frame. Though the film has long since vanished from production, there are still countless millions of 126 negatives surviving in family collections. Even when stored well, these film strips can exhibit colour shifts due to faded dyes as well as dirt, damage and corrosion. Digitising 126 negatives preserves them in, high‑resolution form that can be restored, reprinted, and shared with ease, ensuring those irreplaceable moments endure even as the original film continues to degrade.

Potted History of the 126 Film Format

126 film was introduced by Kodak in 1963 as a drop‑in cartridge system for Instamatic cameras, designed to make loading film foolproof. It used 35 mm-wide film with a single sprocket hole per frame and produced a square 28×28mm image. The format became synonymous with mass‑market snapshot photography through the 1960s and 70s, with millions of Instamatic cameras sold worldwide.
By the late 1970s, 126 lost ground to improved 35 mm quick‑load systems and newer compact formats like 110. Kodak discontinued 126 cameras in 1981, and film production faded out by the 2000s.
The format only survives today through collectors keeping Instamatics alive by shooting expired film stock or reloading cartridges with 35mm film. As the format was never adopted by professional photographers, the quality and sophistication of the cameras never approached that of 35mm or medium format.
